girl-detective asked: So: How do you like being a dad?
It’s mind blowing.
When I heard her first cry, my whole world changed. We go through life with a natural self-centered perspective or at most our perspective also encompasses a loved one but at heart, we see the world in terms of how it relates and affects our self. When Josie was born, I immediately saw the world with new eyes. Everything around me was new in the way it related to my daughter. Everything would need to be explained, warned against, enjoyed, played with and understood. The crib that had sat in that room for years now had a beautifully mundane purpose. The little pink onesies and the plush toys suddenly had reasons.
You’d think that 9 months would be ample time to prepare yet it felt like this newborn was completely unexpected. You can envision all you want but there is no imagining the feeling of holding a tiny human that you helped to create. Something so small and beautiful, completely reliant on you.
Being a dad has already been a lot of hard work and I know there’s a lot more work ahead but I can’t ever imagine that workload overwhelming the joy I feel when I look into her eyes.
TL;DR Being a dad is awesome. Sleep is overrated anyway.
